1) Best Gaffe


John Prescott (who else, you might ask?)

2) Shortest acceptance speeches


First equal, and much appreciated: Ryan Quigley and Sam Crockatt.



3) Most touching acceptance speech


Kevin Le Gendre, explaining how lucky to do a job he loves, and paying sincere tribute to his father, far less fortunate


4) Best mimic


Richard Michael’s imitation of a Cowdenbeath teenager refusing to take any nonsense from a row of educational suits.


5) Best Yahboo moment


Richard Wheatly of JazzFM talking about his 500,000 audience numbers:
“That’s one in the eye for Smooth and one in the bank for Jazz.”


6) Prize for comic timing


Liane Carroll, presenting an award:

“Thank you all SO much..(thinks) ..Oh no, I haven’t won anything”

7) Getting carried away adlibbing Award

Paul Gambaccini announcing his engagement to Helen Mayhew.

  1. I wonder if there will be one next year, with the upheavals going on and articles on a few of the MPs involved. If not, then what sort of celebration of UK jazz is left?
