He's spot on. And the only mainstream reference we have in the UK is the Fast Show's jazz guy who portrays jazz as pretentious, slimy and elitist.
The jazz world only has itself to blame. It is extremely poor at communicating with wider audiences (which once upon a time it used to do exceptionally well).
