Bill Ashton OBE, Michael Garrick MBE

Congratulations to the Founder and Lifetime President of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, Bill Ashton on receiving the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours. He received the MBE as long ago as 1978.

Congratulations to great composer Michael Garrick, who will celebrate 50 years of broadcasting on Monday at BBC Studios Maida Vale, on his MBE.

I wouldn’t try to second-guess either of these strong-minded gentlemen’s wishes…… but if you feel like celebrating with them, you can either:

  1. I feel sure that within the jazz fraternity the award of gongs has little significance. But these two gentleman deserve the highest commendation for their devotion to music and the unrelenting battle they have waged with adversity and fiscal deprivation. Neither will ever be refused a garden party even though jazz is unlikely to be on the menu.
