There’s an obituary in the Telegraph today of that great English orchestral trumpeter David Mason. He used to guest in the orchestras and bands I played in when I was a schoolboy. The presence of that sound coming from the seat beind me was the kind of inspiration I can never forget. The video tells the story of his Beatles “Penny Lane” recording. Modesty, no wasted words, less than a minute, sheer class. RIP.

A great trumpeter and a thoroughly nice man with a terrific sense of humour. I first met David when I was at school – Christ's Hospital – what a thrill as a brass player to talk to the then Principal of the Philharmonia Orchestra! As we speak he's probably tuning up for his first gig with the great and wonderful celestial orchestra.
