RIP Peter Symes

Chris Biscoe writes to sadly inform friends of the passing of Way Out West audience stalwart, photographer Peter Symes:

Peter Symes – photographer, raconteur, follower of the visual arts and tireless chinwagger, who supported jazz in all its many forms since the 1950s, sadly died on Wednesday.
He had prostate cancer and in the last year suffered setbacks which curtailed his activities, but until the latter part of last week his spirit was undimmed. He then experienced a sudden and catastrophic decline.
Information about funeral arrangements will be posted as and when it is received.

  1. This is very sad news. Peter was a truly lovely man and had.a knowledge and love of jazz that was amazing and inspiring. He had the eye as well as an ear for the heartbeat of great music.. May he rest in peace.

  2. Peter was a wonderful friend and huge inspiration and always encouraged me in my photographic career.
We had great chats (chinwags) and much laughter.
    Will greatly miss him.

  3. The news of Peter's departing today has left me and my wife very upset. To be in his company was a real joy, he had so much enthusiasm for art and photography and great mischievious wit. He was a true gent and a marvellous fellow. He will be greatly missed by us.

  4. A very belated comment – just looking at copies of some of his lovely photos including a great shot of Peter King with Archie Shepp. There was always a friendly conversation with him too.
