Here’s Ben Ratliff’s New York Times obituary. Vivid memories of the 2009 London Jazz Festival with John Surman and Drew Gress. Above, a New York date in 2002: Paul Motian and the Electric Quintet playing Motian’s composition Morpion with Chris Cheek, Tony Malaby (saxophone) Steve Cardenas, and Ben Monder(guitar) and Jerome Harris (bass). I went to see Paul Motion many years ago at the basement of a Hotel in Oxford, with Bill Frisell and Joe Lovano.
It was one of the most important moments of my life, It awakened a need within to explore my own ability to see colours in music and to me Paul Motion was mixing timbres like an experienced painter would mix colours. His work with the (in my opinion) best Bill Evans trio would be enough. But his wonderful search and explorations with Monk,On Broadway and inspiration on many younger players is matchless. God Bless Paul Motion!
