RIP Horst Weber (1934-2010)

JazzThing in Germany reports the death last Friday in Garmisch of record producer Horst Weber at the age of 78. The funeral is on 5th March in Munich.

With Matthias Winckelmann he founded ENJA in 1971. In 1986 Weber and Winckelmann parted company and split their back catalogue, but the two labels are back under common management. Matthias Winckelmann was the guest of LondonJazz for an INTERVIEW here at Kings Place in April 2010.

The first of around 800 records produced by the label was Mal Waldron’s album Black Glory.
Jazzthing’s list of the musicians who have recorded for Enja includes Abdullah Ibrahim – who recorded twenty-four times for the label – Terumasa Hino, Yosuke Yamashita, Alexander von Schlippenbach, Albert Mangelsdorff …Chet Baker, Benny Bailey, Tommy Flanagan, Freddie Hubbard, McCoy Tyner, Ray Anderson Renaud Garcia-Fons, Johannes Enders, Florian Weber, Aki Takase, Rabih Abou-Khalil, John Scofield .
