Red Sullivan has brought to our attention a report of the death at the age of 41, of composer-pianist Bernardo Sassetti last Thursday. Sassetti had an accident while out walking on the cliffs at Guincho near Lisbon.
Red Sullivan writes:
“I well remember his London years (he was a member of Guy Barker’s group) and particularly incendiary weeks as a member of Louis Stewart’s great quartet at Ronnie’s… He was such a great pianist, so swinging (really swinging – such taste). On a personal note I remember his great warmth and kindness – and, in enlightened discussion, his huge enthusiasm for Hank Jones. He was a great guy. So very sad. This is truly terrible news.“
