I caught the closing set of the Barbican’s Back2Black Festival in the unusual surroundings of Old Billingsgate, the former fish market, which makes quite a cavernous concert space holding 2,000. Back2Black was the first London version of a festival held regularly in a disused railway station (Estação da Leopoldina)in Rio. Attention picked up during the festival weekend, and the last day sold out.

The final act tonight was Gilberto Gil with his band. He had as guest Dina El Wedidi (below), a young Egyptian singer who has just been chosen to become Gil’s protegee/ mentee on the sixth two-year cycle of the Rolex Mentor and Protege initiative.
