Bad Ass Brass honour "Uncle Lionel" (1931-2012) at Hideaway Live

JON STOKES writes about Bad Ass Brass’s gig tomorrow 14th July at the Hideaway (doors 7pm, music 9pm)  in honour of “Uncle Lionel” Batiste

“Uncle” Lionel Batiste and the Treme Brass Band are the original inspiration behind Bad Ass Brass. In fact, two of the band met him in New Orleans. ‘Uncle Lionel’, a bass drummer, vocalist, and assistant leader of the Tremé Brass Band, died last Sunday at Ochsner Baptist Medical Center after a brief battle with cancer. He was 80 and a true legend. He started his music career at the age of eleven, playing bass drum with the Square Deal Social & Pleasure Club.

To honour Uncle Lionel’s memory and inspiration, Bad Ass Brass will be opening their gig at the Hideaway in Streatham on Saturday night in traditional New Orleans style with a 2nd Line procession.
