Jazz at Boaters – August listings released

The August listings for the free weekly Sunday night jazz gigs at Jazz at Boaters in Canbury Gardens by the Thames in Kingston – run by Simon Carter – have just been released. (Preview by Rob Edgar)

Started in 1990, Jazz at Boaters is one of the longest running weekly jazz nights in London.

August will feature:

Jim Mullen Organ Trio on the 5th. The Glasgow-born guitarist was on the jazz funk scene in the 1980’s playing with the Average White Band and co-leading the Morrisey/Mullen Band. he is notable for playing the guitar with the thumb rather than a plectrum. He is joined by pianist/organist Ross Stanley, and drummer Matt Skelton.

Derek Nash on the 12th. Nash (solo release Joyriding was reviewed by Sebastian) is the leader of the group Sax Appeal and is also a member of the Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra. He plays all four main types of saxophone and will be playing with; bassist Phil Mulford who has played with everyone from Annie Lennox to the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, drummer Frank Tontoh and Simon Carter.

Simon Allen on the 19th. Allen has built up a formidable reputation as an alto and tenor saxophonist. He has played with the likes of Stan Tracey and Don Weller and will be joined by Laurence Cottle on bass and drummer Mike Bradley .

Christian Brewer/Andrea Pozza Quartet on the 26th. Brewer is an alto saxophonist who is heavily influenced by the likes of Cannonball Adderley and Charlie Parker. Italian Andrea Pozza made his debut at the Louisiana Jazz Festival at the age of just 13.With Andy Cleyndert on double bass and drummer Mark Taylor.
