Austin truly was a force of nature. The scale and depth of the tributes to him already show how huge an impact he made in such a short space of time. I got to share the bandstand with him only once here in NYC, but was immediately taken aback by his musical genius, and by the huge generosity of spirit he gave to everything he did. By no means was he just a “prodigy kid”, he was really THAT good, and equally as intense, wild and vibrant off-stage. Everybody who knew or played with him is crushed by the scale of this loss. I wish I could have spent more time with him. It is of some comfort to know that in his short but impacting career he inspired so many listeners, musicians and friends that his influence is already embedded in the seams of the next generation of creative music. What a talent.
