Joanna Forbes L’Estrange writes:
I have been a devotee of Christiane Legrand‘s singing since I was about 8, listening to my mother’s collection of early Swingle Singers LPs. Little did I know then, that one day I would perform those very same songs as a Swingle Singer myself, with Christiane – she was elder sister of composing legend Michel Legrand – in the audience! When I heard with sadness of her death in November 2011, I knew immediately that we should record an album, and dedicate it to her memory. And here it is.
We chose our favourite Michel Legrand numbers (The Summer Knows, You Must Believe in Spring…) and added some of Alexander L’Estrange’s previously unrecorded songs, hence Songs of L’Estrange & Legrand
Our arrangements reflect our love of Bill Evans, the Swingle Singers, James Taylor and The Puppini Sisters. The accompaniments to my multi-layered vocals range from just Alexander on double bass (such as in the opening track How Do You Keep the Music Playing? – see video above) to the whole quintet, namely John Turville (piano), Simon Allen (sax), Adam Riley (percussion), Mike Bradley (drums) and Alexander (bass).
