Carlos Lopez-Real writes about his gig with Mandorla at Guildhall School on 16th May 2013.

I’m writing this while in the middle of a mini-tour of the West Country with Mandorla. A couple of nights ago we played to a packed house in Crediton Arts Centre, generally a non-specialist crowd and very receptive, and last night was Andy Hague’s ever-enjoyable Bebop Club in Bristol. We’re road-testing some new compositions, and they’re evolving every night.

For the gig in the Hall of Guildhall School on May 16th we’ll be playing these new compositions, which include a short suite I’ve written that’s based on some Russian folk melodies. It takes particular inspiration from the way that Benjamin Britten approached them in his 3rd Cello Suite, a piece of music I’ve fallen in love with recently.

The band features John Turville on piano, Dave Manington on bass, and Jon Scott on drums. John and Dave are fellow members of the e17 jazz collective (we live within a stone’s throw of each other) and we’ve collaborated on several projects over the years. As bandleaders and composers in their own right I love their holistic and eclectic approach to the music. Jon’s playing is so multi-dimensional and colourful; he’s so interactive and a joy to play with. Together, the three of them are integral to the development of the music, co-composers really, and they’re great fun to hang with!
