Andre Canniere writes:
Having just recorded what will be our second (as yet untitled) album for the Whirlwind Recordings label, I am extremely thrilled to be showcasing some of the new material at The Forge in Camden on Friday, May 31.
It’s been five years since I moved to London from New York City, and this project has been been a central part of my life since. When we first came together we played music that I had already written; much of it was music that was based on a different part of my life and written without specific players in mind.
The things that inspired me then as a composer have been supplemented with new things, both musical and non-musical. Musically my inspiration has always come from jazz, contemporary classical and indie rock but life and what happens in the world has more of an impact and a natural way of connecting itself to what I write now.
The physical evolution of the group has revolved around the axis of drummer Jon Scott, bassist Ryan Trebilcock and guitarist Hannes Riepler, with pianist Ivo Neame as the most recent addition. Last year was spent touring around the country to promote my first release on Whirlwind (Forward Space), giving us plenty of opportunity to experiment and develop our musical ethos (and on occasion quench our taste for exotic beer).
Needless to say, I’m very excited to be returning to the stage with these guys; our last gig was during the London Jazz Festival in November. Since then, we’ve been rehearsing the new music which we recorded over two days in March.
It’s going to be a blast bringing some of these tunes to the public for the first time but I’m also looking forward to revisiting some of the crowd (and our) favorites from the first album. We hope to see you there.
