Dave Morecroft previews George Garzone’s forthcoming gig with Carlo Conti, Conor Chaplin, and Dave Hamblett at the 606 on 26th June.

In 2010 on this very site, this oft-quoted ditty appeared ahead of George Garzone’s appearance with Mike Janisch at Pizza Express Jazz Club…

“I am not the master of the saxophone, George Garzone is.” (Michael Brecker).

Three years later, George Garzone will return to London for the first time since then, making a rare London appearance with the Italian Carlo Conti Trio trio at the 606 Club on June 26th.

Hailing from Boston, the Grammy Award winner’s CV is enough to make any jazz musician salivate; Mr Garzone has jousted and cross-patterned with Elvin Jones, Jack DeJohnette, Mel Lewis, Buddy Rich, Roy Haynes, AND Brian Blade…add Corea, Brecker, Lovano, Barron, McBride, and Liebman into the mix, and you get an idea of the scale we’re talking.

Garzone will be joined at the 606 by the highly rated Rome-based saxophonist Carlo Conti, who has blazed a path through the Italian scene with bands such as Neo, I Mostri and his own trio. Collaborating together on the 2013 “Restrizioni ingiustificate ” album released on Megasound Records, Carlo and George have formed an exciting musical partnership, and this performance will also feature an allstar UK rhythm section of Conor Chaplin on bass and Dave Hamblett on drums.

This really is a not-to-be-missed opportunity to witness this US giant making a one-night-only appearance!
