Congratulations to Emma Smith who has won the Musicians Company Jazz Musician Award at a competition, that was held last night at Pizza Express Dean Street, exclusively for young jazz singers.
Each singer performed a 20 minute set backed by an ensemble of former medallists which included: Andy Panayi, Steve Brown, Ben Hazelton, and Tom Cawley.
“It was a pleasure to sing with such a quality group” said Smith, “and I feel so humbled to have won it considering the calibre of the other singers there. It was nerve-racking singing in front of Tina May who is like a musical sister to me, but lovely to perform with Tom and Andy who were teachers of mine at the Royal Academy.
Now I’m just excited about my lunchtime gig at the London Jazz Festival on the 23rd November at Pizza Express with the Anoushka String Quartet. (tickets HERE)
The other singers were:
A J Brown
Emily Dankworth
Noemi Nuti
Emma will be presented with her medal during her gig at Pizza Express funded by WCOM on Sunday 18th May 2014.
