A film is being made about the late Keith Crombie, who ran Newcastle’s Jazz Cafe until his death last year. (Links to tributes here). The venue was a hub for local musicians, poets and artists as well as hosting international stars like Wynton Marsalis and Harry Connick Jnr.

Paul Grainger writes:

“My friend Abi Lewis, a film producer and Keith’s god-daughter, started out to make a short film about him three years ago, however she soon discovered he had a more varied and colourful life than she had realised. This meant she is now making a feature length documentary about Keith and the Jazz Cafe, the club he ran for the last 23 years of his life. The film also documents his role on the scene back to the 1950s and 60s. She has all of the footage she needs, including interviews with Keith’s friends, among them Eric Burdon (of The Animals), Greg Hicks (of the Royal Shakespeare Company) and Mike Figgis (award winning film director).”

So far, the film has been self-funded with time, equipment, and music donated by friends and musicians but the film is now in post-production and Abi needs cash to bring it up to broadcast standard with the aim of submitting it to international film festivals.
