Trish Clowes |
Saxophonist/composer and BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist Trish Clowes writes about Emulsion III, taking place over two nights (May 28 and 29) at Village Undergound:
I am excited about Emulsion III. It’s been A LOT of work, but I just know it’s going to be worth it. These things bring out the best in everyone.
I can’t describe how thrilled I am to have FOOD (ECM artists Iain Ballamy and Thomas Strønen) playing at the festival. It’s been something I’ve been working towards for about 3 years – and now it’s happening. These guys are so far ahead in concept it’s just mind-blowing… AND they’re going to collaborate with us in the EMULSION SINFONIETTA.
Not only that, but we are performing a piece of Iain’s which was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 a few years back. I am incredibly proud to be providing Iain with a repeat performance – because for new music, this doesn’t necessarily happen very often. And my very good friend Freddie Gavita is going to be playing the solo trumpet part – this part was originally written for Arvé Henriksen…
Emulsion is all about experimenting, collaborating, putting different genres alongside each other. In addition to headline artists FOOD and core Emulsion groups Tangent and Ensemble Amorpha, we have:
– the fantastic vocal group Juice – Juice on Soundcloud
– big beats band Strobes led by keyboardist Dan Nicholls – Strobes on Soundcloud
All the people involved this festival take joy in exploration… taking risks. You will hear contemporary classical music (Luciano Berio, Kaija Saariaho, Heinz Holliger, Ana Sokolovic, Anna Meredith…), collaborations (Emulsion commissions written by Trish Clowes, Luke Styles, Chris Montague, Calum Gourlay), contemporary jazz (preview of Trish’s 3rd album) and everything in between!
