The winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz 2014 International Jazz Trumpet Competition, held last night in Los Angeles, is 27 year old Marquis Hill, originally from the South Side of Chicago. The prize includes a recording an album for Concord. The other finalists were Adam O’Farrill (son of pianist Arturo) and Billy Buss, who grew up in California and is now in New York. The Gala event last night in Los Angeles featured an award for services to jazz to ex-President Bill Clinton, and contributions from Kevin Spacey and Quincy Jones.
