PREVIEW: Jack Davies Big Band ( Triple Bill, Rich Mix, 16th November, EFG LJF)

This Sunday, 16 November, Jack Davies’ big band will play its first gig in two and a half years. Jack writes:

Since our last gig, the London Olympics have come and gone, a man jumped to earth from the edge of space, Reuben Fowler released an album, and a baby boy called George was born.

To bring seventeen brilliant musicians together is always a challenge, and a memorable pleasure too. This Sunday, my band will line up alongside Matt Roberts’ Big Band and Jeff Spencer’s Crocodile – two other fantastic large ensembles that comprise some of the capital’s best improvisers, led by two brilliant composers.

The music we will play on Sunday will largely draw on our album, but also includes three arrangements of Charles Ives pieces. The real pleasure though will be the bits in between the dots: Alex Munk, Tom Taylor, Martin Speake, Mike Chillingworth, Nick Smart, Laura Jurd will all create moments of joy, sadness, or who knows what. Seventeen musicians who could each keep an audience in rapture with a solo gig. I’ll try not to get in the way.

Sunday will be a reunion, a celebration of things loud and brassy, and an extremely rare chance to see three brilliant big bands in the same place. Don’t miss it.

The Jack Davies Big Band are playing at Rich Mix on 16 November as part of London Jazz Festival. Details and tickets
