The six competitive rounds of the BMW Welt Jazz Awards, under the generic title “Playing My Guitar,” with prize money of EUR 15,000 opened today with a performance today by guitarist Michel Sajrawy (Biography) and his trio in the in the 2007 double-cone exhibition space of BMW Welt in Munich.

The Palestinian-born Sarjawy’s way is to bring the sound world of the Orient in alignment with fusion. Nothing exceptional, but a good start for this series of six matinees, which still has many more flights of fancy to offer:
