REPORT: Bobby Wellins 80th Birthday celebration at the 606 Club

Liam Noble and Anita Wardell

Sebastian writes: Last night the 606 had an 80th birthday celebration of the great Bobby Wellins which Bobby himself was not well enough to attend.  Performing last night – in short sets – were:

Don Weller with Liam Noble, Don Weller Liam Noble Dave Whitford Dave Wickins

Yesterdays
I let a song go out of my heart

Pete Churchill with Dave Whitford and Dave Wickins, then joined by Anita Wardell

Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me
I like being here with you

Art Themen with Mark Edwards, Andy Cleyndert, Spike Wells

Ask Me Now (Monk)
Have You Met Miss Jones

Kate Williams and Art Themen

ArtThemen and Kate Williams

Alone Together
In a Sentimental Way
Up Jumped Spring

The absolutely unique sound, the inventiveness, humour, mystery and sheer musical presence of Bobby (all to be seen above) were sadly missed last night. Belated happy birthday, and best wishes for a speedy and complete recovery.

(Can someone fill in the final sets?)

  1. Laura from the 606 here…we don't have a set list either, but here's what we know about what happened during the second half of the show:

Don Weller & Art Themen performed a few numbers including one of Don's compositions

Liam Noble, Dave Whitford & Spike Wells were joined by Anita Wardell who performed three songs:

    Solitude- Duke Ellington
    Au Privave- Charlie Parker
I’ve never been in Love before- Frank Loesser
    East of the Sun
    (thanks Anita for that!)

Everybody came back up and played together, with Mark Edwards & Kate Williams trading off on piano.

Thanks to all the fantastic musicians who performed in tribute to Bobby, I'm sure we speak for everyone when we say he was dearly missed.
