RIP Joe Temperley 1929-2016

Very sad to have heard of the passing away yesterday May 11th 2016 of Joe Temperley, “Scotland’s greatest ever jazz musician,” a veteran of the Humphrey Lyttelton band in the UK, and subsequently of the Ellington, Herman, Buddy Rich and Thad Jones Mel Lewis bands in the US.

Whereas he has been unable to play in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in the past few months, and was replaced on the last couple of foreign tours, until yesterday he still officially held the baritone chair in the band, and their website recalls a unique jazz life in this  detailed biography. One of the first warm tributes to appear to a popular and unique figure is this article in Fife Today
