Sebastian writes:
The Mason Brothers Quintet with Norwich-raised, New York-resident brothers trombonist Elliot and trumpeter Brad Mason is about to launch an album with a trio of pianist David Kikoski, bassist Matt Penman and drummer Johnathan Blake (Ali Jackson at the launch).
Entitled Efflorescence, it is the long-awaited follow-up to their superb first album Two Sides One Story which was recorded in September 2009 but – after lengthy legal complexities – not released until mid 2011 (review link below).
That album featured the brothers and Dave Kikoski, with Antonio Sanchez, Scott Colley, Joe Locke, Chris Potter and Troy Miller, and a sleevenote written in admiration of the musical closeness of the Mason Brothers by Wynton Marsalis.
Elliot is a full member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra (profile).
The new album will be launched at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City on 18th July.
