As part of the THORNTON HEATH ARTS WEEK the great jazz saxophonist Don Weller (born and bred Thornton Heath) plays at South London’s best Jazz Pub the Lord Napier in a trio with eclectic bassist Andrew Cleyndert and superlative drummer Dave Ohm.

Don Weller is one of the most popular musicians on the uk Jazz circuit with an indefatigable style. He began learning clarinet at the age of 14, soloing in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto at Croydon Town Hall when aged 15. He began playing in Dixieland bands around the Croydon area, but later switched to tenor saxophone. In the 1970s he formed his jazz-rock group Major Surgery. At the same time he worked regularly with pianist Stan Tracey, the ‘Godfather of British Jazz’. Renowned for his versatility, he has played with artists such as Alan Price and Charlie Hearnshaw.

In 1980 he stood in for US star Michael Brecker when the Gil Evans Orchestra played at the Bracknell Jazz Festival, subsequently touring the UK and recorded with one of the band’s trumpeters, Hannibal Marvin Peterson.
