Paul Zauners Sound of Sauwald
(Documentary film directed by Hermann Peseckas and Stefan Sternad. Austria, 2017, 62 min. Film review by Elisabeth Weinek – English and original German)

The Sauwald (meaning pig-forest) is in the north of the Innviertel district of Upper Austria, at the confluence of the Danube and Inn rivers. It is, according to Paul Zauner, a little unspoilt part of the world; in fact nobody is quite sure where it begins or where it ends. The Sauwald is where Paul is from, and where has been organising jazz concerts in the middle of nowhere since 1986. They take place in a barn which has a fabulous acoustic, and in a building which was once a pig-sty, and is now called ‚St. Pig‘s Pub‘ (a play on St Nick‘s Pub in Harlem) where the late night jam sessions happen.

Hermann Peseckas, the award-winning documentary maker who has directed the film, has on the one hand found clever ways to present the region‘s wide open landscapes through all of the seasons of the year, and, on the other, to document the extensive preparations which happen in the run-up to the festival.

Interviews with the musicians and live recordings of concerts, together with film sequences showing the tasty culinary offering give an insight into the brightly varied Austrian and international programme at Inntöne.

Paul Zauner tells the story of his trips to America, of the many friendships he struck up whole there. And of the rapport which can become established symbiotially between musicians and audience, which to him as a player is the moment of happiness and fulfilment.

The viewer sees the pigs out in the meadow reacting to Paul‘s trombone sounds, and dancing on the farmyard in time to the music.

An important helper who also has a significant role in the film is Paul Zauner‘s mother Maria, one of over 100 volunteers and workers at the festival; her strong motivation comes from the conviction that music can be a healing force. (The people of the Innviertel have a reputation for their short, direct way of speaking.).

In this film, Herman Peseckas has succeeded in demonstrating how the nature and its meaning are in a direct relationship with Zauner‘s personality, and how that runs through to the way he experiences and communicates music. This was what Zauner himself wants to get across to the artists and to the public, and where he is able to succeed in such an authentic way.

The film concludes with am appearance by the Bobby Watson Quartet. Like many other musiciana they are old fans of the festival and keep coming back to play in the barn.

This festival is absolutely one of a kind, and for more than 30 years it has had a unique identity and a rhythm all its own.

Der Sauwald liegt im nördlichen Innviertel in Oberösterreich, dort wo Donau und Inn zusammen fliessen.Ein unberührter Fleck der Erde, wie Paul Zauner meint, von dem keiner genau weiss wo er beginnt und endet. Eigentlich ist der Sauwald dort wo Paul ist. Seit 1986 organisiert er Jazzkonzerte in mitten der Pampa, in einer Scheune mit traumhafter Akustik und in einem ehemaligen Schweinestall dem St. Pig´s Pub, eine Anspielung auf den St. Nick´s Pub in Harlem, wo die late night Jamsessions abgehen.

Hermann Peseckas, der Regisseur und preisgekrönter Dokumentarfilmer, versteht es einerseits die weite offene Landschaft in allen Jahreszeiten in Szene zu setzen und andererseits, die umfangreichen Vorbereitungen für das Jazz-Festival Inntöne zu begleiten. Interviews mit den Musikern und Lifekonzert-Aufnahmen, sowie Filmsequenzen über das schmackhafte kulinarische Angebot geben Einblick in das bunte, österreichisch-internationale Programm der Inntöne. Paul Zauner erzählt von seinen Amerika-Aufenthalten, den zahlreichen Freundschaften, die er dort geschlossen hat und der Symbiose, die zwischen Musiker und Zuhörer während dem Konzert entstehen kann, sein persönliches Glücksmoment beim Spielen. Die Schweine auf der Weide der Landwirtschaft reagieren auf die Posaunenklänge von Paul und tänzeln im Hof im Takt der Musik.

Eine wichtige Helferin und Protagonistin im Film ist Paul Zauners Mutter Maria Zauner, eine der über 100 freiwilligen Helferinnen und Mitarbeiter für das Festival, ihre Motivation kommt von der Überzeugung – Musik heilt. (Die Innviertler sind berühmt für ihre kurzen klaren Antworten)

Herman Peseckas schafft es, mit diesem Film den unmittelbaren Zusammenhang von der Bedeutung der Natur auf die Person Zauners, sowie seiner Rezeption und Vermittlung von Musik einwirkt. Genau dieses möchte Zauner teilen, mit den Künstlern und dem Publikum und es gelingt ihm auf eine sehr authentischen Art und Weise.

Der Film endet mit dem Auftritt vom Bobby Watson Quartet, die als alte Fans der Inntöne, wie auch viele andere Musiker immer wieder in die Scheune zurückkehren. Der Dreiklang Wein, Weib und Gesang funktioniert im Sauwald leicht abgeändert: Schwein, Wein und Gesang ist seit über 30 Jahren der Rhythmus dieses einzigartigen Festivals.
