It’s never too early to name names – especially when they are some of the big ones for one of the UK’s premier jazz festivals. Peter Bacon reports:
The 2018 Cheltenham Jazz Festival will run from Wednesday to Monday, 2-7 May, and the headliners announced this morning show the range of the festival, from contemporary jazz and blues through to jazz-inflected pop. Names announced are:
Kamasi Washington – The saxophonist whose follow-up to his 2015 three-disc The Epic is an EP called Harmony Of Difference, due any day soon, is sure to fill the Big Top on Sunday 6 May.
Randy Crawford – A rare UK visit for the Street Life singer, her collaboration with The Crusaders. She will make her first visit to Cheltenham for a Big Top concert on Wednesday 2 May.
Christian McBride Big Band – The bassist has a big personality, so imagine what a McBride Big Band will sound like in the flesh: Ebullient is the word! A UK debut for the group which recently released its second album Bringin’ It. It plays in Cheltenham Town Hall on Sunday 6 May.
Beth Hart – the blue-rock singer sold all the tickets in the house last time she was in Cheltenham in 2015. Her new album is called Fire On The Floor and the virtual flames will be burning in the Big Top on Saturday 5 May.
Tickets for these shows go on sale to Cheltenham Festival members at 1pm on 8 November and to the general public at 10am on 10 November. The full festival programme will be announced in the New Year.

I think the Kamasi Washington EP is out… I'm playing a track from it in my October jazz-and-more mix on Mixcloud (second track) https://www.mixcloud.com/mckergow/steely-dan-plus-plus/
