Dartington’s annual cultural festival kicks off in late July and offers a rich mix of summer school stuff and concert performances across a wide range of genres, including classical, jazz, folk and world music. The press statement reads like this: Jazz-related highlights include performances of Moondog from Joanna MacGregor and Songs of the Jazz Age with Sarah Gabriel, Steve Dummer and Stephen De Pledge, a Jazzworks performance from Chris Batchelor (trumpet) Mark Lockheart (saxophone) Steve Lodder (piano), Alec Dankworth (bass), Jon Scott (percussion), Adriano Adewale with Brazilian jazz percussion and a jazz jam with Dartington Jazz students at the end of their course. Courses include Introduction to Jazz, Jazz Instrumental Workshops: Piano, Saxophone, Double Bass & Drums, Open Jazz Ensembles, Brazilian Music and Song and Big Band. Dartington Summer School & Festival takes place in a scenic Grade 1 listed country estate located in Totnes, Devon built in the 14th century. The 2019 programme features an exciting and wide-ranging array of leading musicians and artists, from early music to folk, classical and jazz, in an outstanding four-week programme of masterclasses, workshops and performance.
