Helen Wallace, Programme Director at Kings Place, explained: “When we were thinking about our year-long series celebrated female creatives, Venus Unwrapped, Terri Lyne Carrington was top of our wish-list. She’s a legendary pioneer, First Lady of drums – the career is dizzying: I love the fact she learned drums as a tiny child on the kit her grandfather had used in Fats Waller’s band. When she made her professional debut aged 11 with Clark Terry, Buddy Rich went wild. “She has collaborated with Dizzy Gillespie, Stan Getz, Cassandra Wilson, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock – just about everyone. She’s the first woman to win a Grammy for best Jazz instrumental album (for Money Jungle: provocative in blue), and has proved herself a powerful artistic catalyst as band leader and producer. Terri Lyne combines blinding stage charisma with a restless creativity, always on to the next musical challenge, plain to hear in her latest project, Social Science, bringing together a new generation of instrumentalists, DJs and rappers to confront social justice issues head-on. “At Kings Place you can hear the jazz, R&B, hip-hop-inspired album followed by a set with British jazz talent, including Soweto Kinch, Emma-Jean Thackray, Truemendous and Ayanna Witter-Johnson. We’re thrilled she’ll be talking us through Nina Simone’s Black Gold album, too, for Classic Album Sundays: prepare for unforgettable stories.” Saturday 16 November, 7pm (BOOKINGS/DETAILS) Terri Lyne Carrington and Social Science Community (Val Jeanty – electronics / DJ, Santiago Bosch – keyboard, Morgan Guerin – sax, Bass player TBC) – Waiting Game Terri Lyne Carrington has said that Social Science ‘… was born from a need to express the emotions and thoughts about where we are socially, historically, politically, and spiritually. This alternative jazz band reflects a contemporary/post-modern view on music.’ This show celebrates the launch of the new double album Waiting Game on Motema.
