Deal Music & Arts Virtual Creative Jazz Weekend runs from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 November.
This special online event encompasses specially recorded concerts, interviews, tutorials and a live webinar and has been put together in full cooperation with National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO)

The event has been curated by Joe Browne, project leader of Deal Music & Arts Jazz Journey, and a National Youth Jazz Orchestra Music Associate Educator. The event celebrates the launch of DMA hosting the NYJO Academy South East at Goodwin Academy from September 2021, which will offer young musicians of varying levels the opportunity to focus on all aspects of jazz.
NYJO Ambassadors will be on hand at 6.00pm on Saturday on a special live Webinar where they will answer questions about what it is like to be involved in a NYJO Academy as well as being a professional jazz musician.
Some of the highlights of the weekend include Adam Sieff, former head of jazz for Sony Music interviewing Norma Winstone MBE, one of the most prestigious jazz musicians in the UK. Recommendations on some of her recent performances are suggested.
Writer and Broadcaster Christopher Cook interviews newly appointed DMA Education Director Peter Cook to discuss what drives his passion for music and music education as well as his vision for the future of education projects in East Kent.
Joe Browne will explore ways to create a performance of jazz standards, offering in depth tutorials which include Dizzy Gillespie’s A Night in Tunisia, Pat Metheny’s Song for Billbao, Cedar Waton’s Bolivia and Juan Tizol/Duke Ellington’s Caravan.
Kenneth Peers and Jamie Rogers release a single of their work Gethsemane, recorded in August in Canterbury Cathedral. Jamie Rogers, from Deal, was one of DMA’s first bursary winners and has gone on to become Assistant Director of Music at London’s Marylebone Church and is an Assistant Organist at Canterbury Cathedral.
The weekend concludes with a specially recorded programme of jazz classics, made by Joe Browne and the NYJO Ambassadors. The programme was recorded in St George’s Church and features music by Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Pat Metheny.
