The Pizza Express website describes them: “Co-Led by one of the most versatile and exciting vocalists on the UK jazz scene Brigitte Beraha and ‘formidably skilled’ UK pianist Barry Green, the all-star contemporary jazz quartet Babelfish craft multi-lingual songs into little musical gems. Between them they have played with the great and the good of jazz and have been garnering rave reviews since their 2012 debut album for their beautiful musical renderings drawn from an eclectic songbook. Fast-paced tunes about sushi, free jazz, contemporary classical or traditional folk: as any Hitchhiker will know, the Babelfish will translate from any language into your own. Performing songs from their three albums to date and more, this concert will be their first in-person performance of 2021 so promises to be joyous!“
Talking to the members of the band, the anticipation as they look forward to getting back together is palpable.
Brigitte Beraha says: “It’s mainly about playing together again really, our first face-to-face concert of 2021, and three years since we last played Pizza Express. We can’t wait to play in front of an audience again!” And Chris Laurence is looking forward to resuming his musical companionship with Paul Clarvis. Together they are veterans of literally thousands of studio sessions : “I’ve known Paul such a long time. I admire him, his ethos around the music. He’s strong sense of a moral compass… and a wonderful sense of humour.”
Babelfish has made three albums, the first was in 2012. There are also new songs: “A few standards ‘à la Babelfish’ not recorded previously,” as Beraha explains.
