Musicians’ Company’s Young Jazz Musician 2021 prize awarded to trombonist Daniel Higham

The winner of the Musicians’ Company’s Young Jazz Musician Award 2021 is Daniel Higham (trombone).

“The Master of The Musicians’ Company, John Nichols, presented Daniel with his award at the Pizza Express Jazz Club on 26 September.

The other finalists who played in the competition were: Jas Kayser (drums), Jonathan Mansfield (vibes), Sean Payne (alto sax), Noah Stoneman (piano) and Jonny Wickham (bass). The award was announced following a close audience vote.

Daniel Higham joins a distinguished list of past winners including singer Tina May, saxophonists Andy Panayi and Tim Garland, and singer and BBC Radio 3 presenter Emma Smith.

Daniel Higham grew up in London where he began playing the trombone at a young age. He has studied at the Royal Academy of Music as well as the Purcell School of Music. He is currently a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra, the Kansas Smitty’s House Band and Clark Tracey’s Sextet. Alongside this he pursues a varied freelance career, recording for artists such as Jamie Cullum.

Each year the Musicians’ Company, rich in history yet in tune with the modern world and the challenges facing young musicians, donates over £250,000 in scholarships and awards in support of young musicians at the start of their careers across many musical genres.” Press Release Ends
