Henry Spencer: ‘The Survivor and The Descendant’

Henry Spencer releases a new music video today. The Survivor and The Descendant is the title track of his EP released in October 2021. His band (Henry Spencer, trumpet, flugelhorn, compositions; Ant Law, guitar; Matt Robinson, piano, fender Rhodes; Jason Simpson, double bass; David Ingamells, drum kit) will be at Ronnie Scott’s on 4 April.

Henry writes: The title, ‘The Survivor and The Descendant’, comes from thinking about how a descendant of people that have committed some of the worst acts in human history might try to deal with their own family history and the feeling of guilt. Then, if this descendant was to actually meet a victim, a survivor, or a descendant of a victim of their ancestor’s actions, how they might try to establish a relationship. Despite seeming to be on completely different sides they may find they actually share a lot in common. The polarisation that’s so often talked about isn’t necessarily as valid as how we’re all so undeniably connected. It’s about atonement, healing and human connection.
